My junior year was nothing as I had expected it to be. Within these three years, I have experienced new curriculum, new teachers, and new activities that have forced me out of my comfort zone. Classes that have changed the way I see what we call the “real” world are AVID, AP US History, and AP English Language.
In AVID we learn how to take effective notes, tutor each other, and most importantly, separate the cliques we automatically group into. In society there are always people that we won’t appreciate, but we need to learn to get along with them anyways because we never know when we’ll need their help.
In AP US History, I’ve learned new things about past cultures. The topics that stood out to me were Civil Rights. Ordinary people fought, non-violently, to accomplish their demands. These demands were not at all selfish, but basic necessities. Leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr., Gandhi, and Cesar Chavez stood up for what they believed were right. They organized a group of members and marched, protested, and occupied areas to receive equality. Together they accomplished a couple of basic rights, but unfortunately, these minority groups are still not entirely seen as equal to other races by the rest of the world.
In my English class, I have not only learned to improve my vocabulary and grammar, but also the connotation in my diction. I’ve witnessed how words aren’t just terms written on a paper, but they can actually bring down buildings and tear people down as well.
A few aspects that I need to improve upon myself are my presentation skills. I feel nervous and my mind goes completely blank when I attempt to speak in front of a large crowd. Hopefully next year I will become more comfortable with my presentation skills to prepare myself for the presentations I will be doing in a university. On the other hand, a talent that I obtain is learning from my mistakes. It is helpful because I make a lot of mistakes, but at the same time I learn from them so that I won’t repeat that mistake. That way, each time a new mistake happens, I can keep it from happening again and I will know what I must do in the future.
In this future, I hope to meet new people and explore new places. In college I want to learn from the mistakes that allow me to learn how to be an adult and follow the path that is right for me. I want to fight for what I believe I deserve and fight for the education that I want for myself in order to be qualified for my dream job as a nurse and help others.
